Limb-lengthening operations are a growing trend in the field of cosmetic surgery. The procedure is generally viewed as a godsend for people whose short stature affects their lives and psychological well-being, as the operations can add a good two to three inches to their height.
Procedure
First is the surgical operation during which the bone is cut and a special orthopedic apparatus (designed by Dr. Illizarov) along with internal fixation devices are used.
The second is the stretching (distraction, lengthening) period. Our technology allows to make about 1 mm stretching a day. The duration of the distraction period depends on the lengthening amount and usually takes 2-3 months.
At the end of the lengthening period the external devise is removed from patient’s leg and internal device is locked at lower end.
The procedure is usually performed on for both legs at the same time. The maximum possible leg lengthening is 7-10 cm in leg bones. Same in the thigh bones if person wants more height gain.
During the treatment the patients are active. The day after operation all of them find it easy to move about without any help and can walk home with the help of supports and wait for consolidation.
How long does it take?
The whole process of leg-lengthening procedure can take 6 up to 9 months. You’ll need to use a wheelchair if your weight is more than 60 to 65 kg. Or can walk with elbow cruches with putting some weight on legs our physiotherapists assist the patient in rehabilitations.
The Complication
Like any major surgical procedures, leg lengthening surgeries can also develop glitches leading to complications. How ever most of these can entirely avoided by meticulous pre operative preparation and planning.
The Cost
Height increase surgery costs $US 12,500. This does not include the stay after the surgery when the patient is in the lengthening period. Accomodation costs are extra & are dependent on whether you opt to stay in a guest house or rented accomodation. Accomodation generally costs approx $5000 per quarter inclusive of food.

The result of height gain surgery varies from 7.5 cm to 10 cm depending on the requirement of the patient It depends on how much benefit the person wants from height gain.
